What is the Toon Tone Game?
Toon Tone is a free browser-based color game that tests how well you remember the iconic colors of your favorite cartoon characters. In the toon tone color game you're shown a character and asked to recreate a specific color tone from memory using Hue, Saturation, and Brightness sliders. It's a fun color guessing game for artists, designers, and anyone who loves cartoons.
How to Play
Each game has 5 rounds. In every round you see a cartoon character and are asked for the exact color of one part, like their hair, shirt or skin. Recreate that color from memory with the sliders; a live preview shows the color you're building as you go.
Choose Difficulty
Easy has no time limit, Medium gives you 15 seconds, Hard only 5 seconds per round.
Adjust HSB Sliders
Use the Hue strip and Saturation/Brightness controls to match the character's color from memory.
Submit and Score
Hit Submit when you are happy with your guess. Each round is scored 0-10 based on color accuracy, then your 5 rounds are averaged.
Understanding HSB Colors
HSB stands for Hue, Saturation, and Brightness, a color model that matches how humans naturally think about color.
Scoring System
Your score is calculated based on how close your HSB values are to the target color:
- 50% Hue accuracy, getting the right color family is the most important factor
- 25% Saturation accuracy, how vivid or muted you make the color
- 25% Brightness accuracy, how light or dark you set the color
Scoring is steepest right next to the target: the first few degrees or percent you are off cost the most, while bigger misses are treated more gently (10° off on hue alone still scores 8.8). Hue carries the most weight, so get it close first. Use the hint button if you are stuck, but it costs 1 point from that round score.
Tips for Better Scores
- Focus on getting the hue right first, because it is worth 50% of your score
- Most cartoon colors are fairly saturated: about 4 in 5 have 50% saturation or more (median 78%), though skin and fur can be much lower
- Most character colors are bright: about 4 in 5 have 70% brightness or more (median 88%)
- Use hints strategically on colors you are less confident about
- Practice regularly to train your color memory and perception
